3 Tips for Beautiful, Healthy Summer Hair

After the rainy spring we’ve had in central Indiana, most of us are anxious to get outside into the summer sun. While we are craving the fresh air, leisure activities, and vitamin D, our hair needs extra special care to stay healthy. Indiana summers are known for high temperatures and high humidity, which can wreak havoc on all types of hair. The professionals at DeWeese Design Salon, Inc. recommend these 3 tips to keep your hair healthy and looking beautiful all summer long.

1. Use UV Protection

UV protection is not just for your skin. Your hair needs protection from the sun’s harmful rays just as much as your skin does. To protect your hair, use haircare products with natural UV protection. You will want to find something natural, so that you are not adding unnecessary chemicals to your already damaged summer hair. The summer heat tends to leave the pores of the skin and scalp open, allowing for further absorption of ingredients in hair products – so make sure your hair and body are absorbing clean products.

2. Cover Up

To further protect your hair from UV rays and help retain your natural moisture, wear a hat or a head scarf as much as possible. Scarves also act as damage control for the hair. They keep the hair in place during visits to the beach, where wind from the sea can result in terrible tangles.

3. Condition, Condition, Condition

We can’t stress enough how important it is to condition your hair during the summer months. Cuticle cells (the outer layer of your hair) have an invisible bond that holds them tightly together. Over time and through exposure to the environment, especially heat and sun, these bonds weaken, leaving gaps between the cuticle cells that make the hair surface rough. Hair in this condition is frizzy and tangles easily. When you condition, there are two actions at work: cuticle cells falling in tightly against each other, and a coating on each hair strand that keeps the cells bound together. This results in smoother, shinier hair that is less likely to tangle or frizz.

Conditioning provides much needed moisture to dry summer hair. However, it is important to condition correctly to avoid build-up. The knowledgeable stylist at DeWeese can recommend the proper conditioning treatment and products that your unique hair requires.

At DeWeese Design Salon, we know how important it is to keep your hair healthy throughout the summer.  If you’re in Indianapolis or Avon, contact us today at (317) 271-8000 to set up an appointment, or just stop by—we happily accept walk-ins.
