4 Hair Myths We’re Busting at the Salon

At DeWeese Design Salon Inc. in Plainfield, IN, we’ve heard it all — from DIY tricks gone wrong to old-school advice passed down from generation to generation. But not everything you hear about hair is true. Today, we’re having a little fun and setting the record straight on four of the most common hair myths we hear from clients in our chairs.

Myth #1: Cutting Your Hair Makes It Grow Faster

Let’s kick things off with one of the most persistent myths out there. While regular haircuts do help keep your hair healthy by getting rid of split ends, they don’t actually affect how fast your hair grows. Hair growth happens at the scalp, not at the ends, but trimmed, healthy ends can make your hair look longer and fuller because it’s not breaking off as easily.

Myth #2: You Should Switch Shampoos or Your Hair Gets “Used To It”

This one’s a classic. The truth is that your hair doesn’t build up an immunity to shampoo. However, your hair’s needs can change — with the seasons, your lifestyle, or after a color treatment. So, it’s fine to rotate products if your hair feels dry, oily, or weighed down. But don’t toss your favorite shampoo just because you’ve been using it too long.

Myth #3: Plucking One Gray Hair Will Make More Grow Back

We promise, plucking a gray hair won’t cause an army of grays to sprout in its place. Each follicle produces one strand of hair, so pulling one won’t magically multiply them. That said, plucking can irritate the follicle or cause damage over time, so we always recommend embracing those silvery strands — or letting us help you cover them with a fresh color.

Myth #4: Air-Drying Is Always Better Than Blow-Drying

Air-drying can be gentler than heat styling, but it’s not automatically better. Letting your hair stay wet for too long can make it more fragile and prone to breakage, especially if it’s fine or chemically treated. The key is balance — using a heat protectant and your dryer on a low setting can be both effective and safe.
